This prestigious recognition highlights Dr. Alexis Kalergis' leadership in scientific research both in Chile and internationally, as well as his significant contributions to vaccine innovation, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Kalergis has dedicated his career to exploring immune defense mechanisms against viral pathogens, especially those causing respiratory infections.

Among his most notable accomplishments is the development of a vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This vaccine not only prevents severe respiratory infections but also protects against cognitive impairment caused by the virus—a unique effect discovered by Dr. Kalergis and his team.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Cell Press selected a group of scientists whose research has driven meaningful advancements for both science and society.

Dr. Kalergis was chosen for his pioneering research on immune responses to viral infections and his instrumental role in developing one of the world’s most widely used COVID-19 vaccines, bolstering Chile’s status as a global leader in immunology.

Reflecting on this recognition, Dr. Kalergis shared, "This honor reflects the collective effort of our research team and the support of various institutions that have believed in Chilean science. We remain committed to advancing knowledge that directly benefits human health."

Throughout his career, Dr. Kalergis has published over 350 scientific articles and trained hundreds of young researchers, significantly contributing to the development of Chilean scientific talent.

He has also actively fostered international collaborations, working with scientists and institutions in countries including the United States, France, Greece, Japan, China, and Switzerland.

"Science holds the power to transform lives and address humanity's greatest challenges. It is an honor to be part of this group of scientists driving innovation and progress," Dr. Alexis Kalergis.

In addition to his research, Dr. Kalergis has served as a scientific advisor at both national and international levels. He has been involved in various governmental commissions in Chile and serves on the Council of Scientific Advisors for the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), a United Nations organization.

This international recognition underscores MIII and UC Chile's commitment to advancing science and health, while also solidifying Dr. Kalergis' position as a leading figure in immunology.

His work showcases the far-reaching global impact of Chilean science in addressing some of humanity’s most urgent challenges.

"Science holds the power to transform lives and address humanity's greatest challenges. It is an honor to be part of this group of scientists driving innovation and progress," stated Dr. Kalergis.
